FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents,

Washing of the Feet

By washing the disciples’ feet Jesus shows us the trademark of those who follow him – humble service. The Eucharist cannot be separated from this gesture of love and humility. It is at once the most sacred sign and the most human. We only re-enact it once a year in our liturgy, but it is enacted everyday in our simple acts of kindness. Peter’s response to Jesus serves as a warning to us. Being a giver can put us in a position of superiority. We are not the Messiah! Can we let ourselves be served as well as serve? Can we let Christ touch us through the hands of service of others?

External Catholic Special Character Review for Development

Last week we hosted our review team from the Catholic Education Services Office for the four yearly external review. A written report will be sent to the Board of Trustees who will share the outcome with you all early next term. That said, the review went very well, the reviewers were very positive and affirming of all aspects of our school and its entire school community. Thank you all for your support and participation during the process.

CAR PARKING

Auckland Transport last week were ticketing cars illegally parked or not following the road code.  Please be aware of the areas around the school when dropping off and collecting your child.  NO child is to be dropped off or collected in school grounds.

We pray Lord Jesus, Servant King, you set aside your glory to become our slave.

You touch us in intimate love. Help us to know you in our service of others,

in theirs to us, in the breaking of bread and the washing of feet.

Principal

DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES (DRS) REPORT

Holy Week is upon us. Holy Week is an extremely important week in the life of the Church. It is the time when we contemplate Jesus’ final journey before the Resurrection. The focus in classrooms will be on the Stations of the Cross. We will start the week with a Palm Sunday Liturgy Monday 26 March 9am, then conclude with a Holy Week Liturgy on Thursday 29 March starting at 2:00pm. The new week will begin on Wednesday 4 April with an Easter Liturgy celebrating Jesus as the risen Lord. All are welcome to come and participate in these times of prayer and reflection.

Thank you for your support of the ‘Just one thing for Tonga’.  Our school ‘red and white’ mufti day raised over $1248.10 to support the work of the Mercy sisters in Tonga This is another example of how we as a community can make a difference to the lives of others.

NEWS FROM THE BOARD

Your Board is currently working hard on appointing our new school principal.  The advertisement was posted in February and closed at the beginning of March.  We received and have reviewed a number of applications for the position. Your board appreciates the importance of finding just the right person for our school and, as such, has decided to re-advertise the position to widen the potential pool of applicants. This means we will not have a new principal appointed by the time our current principal, Carmel Platt, leaves at the end of this term. In the interim we know our two very capable deputy principals, Detta Fairweather and Sue Kubala will ensure the continued smooth running of the school with Sue Kubala being named as our Acting Principal. We are sure you will support Sue in her new role and your board in their continued search for that special person to be our new school principal.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM

Howick Historical Village Visit

During week 5 Rooms 18-22 were lucky enough to go to the Howick Historical Village as part of their Discovery concept learning.

The students were lucky enough to experience building a raupo hut, take part in some outdoor games that were fashionable back in the time of the early settlers and be part of the decision making process that occurs when migrants are forced to move to another country.

The students got into the action by dressing up and experiencing what life would have been like for a child back in the early 1840s.

This learning was a valuable experience to take back to the classroom to draw on when discovering the characteristics, attributes and dispositions one needs to take on various journeys.

Many thanks to Mrs McClenaghan for all her hard work organising the event and particular thanks to the many parents who assisted us on the day.

NEWS FROM OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Interschool Swimming

Recently a selection of our Year 4-6 students represented our school at the HPPA Interschool Swimming Sports held at Lloyd Elsmore Pools.

We took a very strong team and eagerly await the confirmed results from the co-ordinators.

We know we took out a number of first, second and third placings in the individual finals and placed well in the relay events as well.

Congratulations to all our swimmers; your behaviour, attitude, hard work, determination and team spirit made us very proud on the day.

Thank you for representing us with the Our Lady Star of the Sea spirit.

HOWICK ROTARY FUN RUN

On Sunday 18 March twenty four of our Year 5/6 students and a group of teachers took part in the Howick Fun Run. Proceeds from this event went to the Howick Coastguard.  Everyone completed the 5.9km course which we can say was not entirely flat!!

All children received a medal which they wore proudly to school on Monday.

After the run lucky number prizes were presented and several of our children received these.

We look forward to participating in this event again next year.

HELPING HANDS

Helping Hands has been part of Our Lady Star of the Sea’s culture for quite some time.  It is where our school community comes together to help those in stressful situations i.e. a parent or grand parent being very ill, a family bereavment or a new born baby to the family.

We would like those in need to know we care!  If you would like to be a part of this wonderful group of caring people who are called upon once or twice a year to either make a meal, bake a cake, transport children to/from school or utilise your gardening skills please fill out the form and return to the office.

As we all know – “we are in this together”.

If we can assist your family or if you hear of any family in our school community please let the office know.

Thank you
