The Mercy cross is a cross within a cross originally designed by

Catherine McCauley, the Mercy foundress. Originally it had a dark

background with a white cross in the middle. Catherine chose the

cross to be the symbol of the Sisters of Mercy because of her deep

love for the crucified Jesus.

This beautiful cross here before us is a reminder of our links with

the Mercy community and their dedication to the work of Jesus in

the world today.

The job of creating this wonderful cross was entrusted to

the creative hands of Lou Pendergrast-Mathieson.

Lou is an Auckland born glass artist who lives in

Takapuna.
