From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Do you want to fast this Lent?

Fast from hurting words and say kind words.
Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude.
Fast from anger and be filled with patience.
Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope.
Fast from worries and trust in God.
Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity.
Fast from pressures and be prayerful.
Fast from bitterness and fill your heart with joy.
Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others.
Fast from grudges and be reconciled.
Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.
Pope Francis

Catholic Character Review 13 – 15 March 2018

All catholic schools are externally reviewed every four years. Next week it is the turn of our school and we will welcome our reviewers;  Linda McQuade – Vicar of Education, and from Catholic Education Services: Phil Mahoney – General Manager and Colleen Gleeson – Review & Development Officer and Michelle Jadoo, Principal of St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Avondale.

Thank you to those of you who participated in the survey in preparation for this review, your responses have been sent to the reviewers. The team will visit classrooms, speak with small groups, review paperwork and generally have  a look at what we do. We are looking forward to showcasing all of the wonderful things that happen at our school. Similarly this review will provide some worthwhile reflections for our next steps. The BOT will receive a report in a few weeks, we will share the outcomes.

Sharing our cultural diversity

We have installed a large whiteboard on the wall of the admin building between the school patrol signs and our parent notice board. Our hope is that this board will be used by our family groups for communication in their home language. We are keen to share all of our events and happenings with our diverse communities. If you would like to place messages on this board could you please see myself, Carmel Platt or Sue Yandell.

Year 1 – 3 Reports

Milestone anniversary reports for students in Years 1- 3 will be published on the parent portal. Parents of students receiving a report will be advised by email with information on how to access their child’s report. Not all children will receive a report this term.

DRS Report

If we live the faith in our daily life, then our work too becomes a chance to spread the joy of being a Christian.

Pope Francis

The theme for the fourth Sunday of Lent, this coming Sunday, is Joy. Joy of the Gospel, Joy of the upcoming Easter celebration, Joy in God’s love. During Lent the Church encourages us to focus on three key aspects of our faith, to pray, to share and to fast – that is to give up or go without something –  and to do this in Joy. With only two weeks to go, let us continue our lenten promises with a sense of ‘Joy’ in knowing God’s love for us is unconditional. Our children are a visible reminder to us of this.

Congratulations goes to the children who, through the ‘Just one thing for Tonga” focus, are trying to bring Joy to the lives of those devastated by Cyclone Gita. To date we have raised $295.00 . Please continue to encourage your children to give up a treat or do some extra jobs at home to raise money.

On Friday 16 March the Liturgy Team is holding a mufti day to raise more money. Children can wear red and white clothing to school and bring a gold coin to donate to the Just one thing for Tonga fund

Thank you for support.

Manaakitia te katoa

Share your gifts with others

Prayer Intention :

E te ariki, we pray for the people of Tonga, may they find comfort and peace through our prayers and support as they seek to rebuild their homes and communities.

Year 5 and 6 Retreats

At the end of week 3 the Year 5 and 6 students took part in two separate retreats. The Year 6s headed into the Mercy Centre in Ponsonby to learn more about our mercy charism and discover ways we can show mercy in our own lives. The Year 5s went to our school site in Granger Road and spent their time looking at their own spirituality and ways they could develop their relationship with Jesus.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and every student took something away from the day to develop in their own lives. Back at school we have already seen some of the benefits of this day in the way the students are interacting with each, leading prayer and participating more fully in the prayer moments we have at school.

Our thanks goes out to all the parents that assisted us on the day, to Mrs Fairweather for her wisdom and guidance and all the Senior Team teachers who worked hard to make the day the special event that it was.

Year 6 Retreat Day

On Friday 16th February the Year 6 children went on a retreat to The Mercy Centre at St Mary’s College in Ponsonby to learn more about the Catholic history and being closer to God .

When we got there Sister Teresa welcomed us. We followed her into the Cecilia Maher room. She talked to us for a few minutes then we had morning tea.

After morning tea we split into groups and went off to our activities. The first activity that we went to was with Mrs Brooke we were doing a walk in the garden.  We could draw a picture, write a poem or a prayer. I drew a picture and wrote a prayer.

Next my group went to Mrs Penny in the Cecilia Maher room.  She gave us small sentences with titles in a bag. My buddy was Carmen we worked together well.

After Mrs Penny we went to the Bishop Pompallier centre.  In the Bishop Pompallier Centre every door had a Bishop’s name on it.  There was one door that was locked and behind the door there were a lot of real books.  The Bishop Cleary Room had a sculpture of the Last Supper.

The Church was my favourite place because it was so quiet and we could talk to God without any noise and without people annoying you.

I really enjoyed my retreat and I would really like to do it again but this year is my last year so sadly I can’t.

Senior Team Swimming Sports

The sun was shining and the weather was warm as the Senior Team headed to Shelly Park School for their annual swimming sports. It was great to see so many students participating at their level and giving it their best on the day. Our thanks to Mrs Penney who organised much of the day and to all our parents who helped out with various roles on the day.

Road Safety   –  Juniors

 Dear Mum and Dad
This week Constable Merv and Marianne talked to us about road safety.   We went out in bright colours coats then learnt how to cross the road safely.
You have to stop, look and listen and you look both ways.   You never cross the road by yourself and when there is a sneaky driveway you need to look very carefully.
Thanks for keeping us safe Constable Merv and Marianne.
