I stepped up nervously on to the diving board at Lloyd Elsmore Park. I was in the 25 metre freestyle race. The starter blew his whistle, shouted ‘Take your marks’, BANG! I dived into the cool water and swam as hard as I could to the end of the pool. I wanted to swim a good time so I could make the finals for our school.

I was nervous. We sat down on the steps waiting for the races to begin. Each swimmer walked to the end of the pool where we were sorted into our lanes to race. I could hear the schools cheering loudly for their own team members.
