Certificate of Preference

To be eligible for preference enrolment, at least one of the following criteria must be met:

5.1 The child is baptised or is preparing for baptism in the Catholic Church.

5.2  The child’s sibling(s) have been baptised in the Catholic Church.

5.3  At least one parent/guardian is a baptised Catholic.

5.4  With the agreement of the child’s parent/guardian, a significant familial adult undertakes to support the child’s formation in the faith and practices of the Catholic Church. The significant familial adult is expected to be practicing their faith in their own local parish. They may be a grandparent, aunt, or uncle, who is actively involved in the child’s upbringing. Follow this process by (Process for Criterion 5.4 Preference of Enrolment Applications) and here for supporting evidence form (Supporting Evidence Form_Criterion 5.4 Preference of Enrolment)

5.5  One or both non-Catholic parents/guardians are preparing to become Catholic.

  • For criteria 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, and 5.5, the Certificate of Preference must be signed by a Catholic Priest.
  • For criterion 5.4, contact Catholic Education Services at [email protected].

Appointments with the Parish Priest of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church can be scheduled via the parish secretary at 09 534 8710.

Please note: Students who do not meet any of the above Preference Criteria (ie, have no Catholic connection) are welcome to apply as ‘non preference students’. Our Lady Star of the Sea is able to take up to 5% of its maximum roll as non preference students when spaces are available. In this case, we will not expect you to provide a signed Certificate of Preference.

NON-PREFERENCE ENROLMENT

  • The school can accept up to 5% of its total roll as non-preference students (maximum 30 places).

Non-preference acceptance criteria applicants:

-Accept that they will be attending a school of special character and that their place in the school is conditional on their participating in the programme

-Agree to Pay attendance dues (these are not voluntary).

Non-preference enrolments, up to the 5% of total roll number threshold, will be accepted based on, but not limited to, a combination of the following, at the Principal discretion:

  • family willingness to support the values and Special Character of school
  • association with the school (recommendations from within the school community, ties with the school community, proximity to the school)
  • time the enrolment has been on file
  • whether siblings to come in subsequent years would put non preference numbers above 5% of our total roll threshold

If no immediate space is available, non-preference students can opt to be placed on a waiting list.

Family-Whanau Book

The Family-Whanau book is an important resource for families as they support their children who are using the Religious Education Programme in Primary Schools.

It provides background information on the school programme and many practical suggestions for family prayer – karakia, including ideas to help develop the faith and spirituality of families.
