Dear Families,

Welcome to our final newsletter of the year.

What a year it has been! You will have all received our annual Our Lady Star of the Sea magazine by now, which is jam-packed full of snippets of our fabulous year.

End of Year Mass Celebration

On Friday we held our annual end of year Mass. It was a real celebration of our year of learning under the overarching concept of Joyfulness. Fr John and Fr Terry con-celebrated, with Fr John’s homily around being thankful for a wonderful year being well received. We acknowledged our Year 6 leavers as well as announced our 2020 Year 6 house captains.

Congratulations to   …

Maher – Andrew D’Silva and Drew Smal

Garin – Niamh Falanitule and Jade Howse

Barbier – Keanu Milne and Tayla Kay

McAuley – David Li and Blake Pennington

Our fabulous team are definitely ready for a well earned break as are our wonderful learners who have embraced all that school has had to offer this year and are deserving of a wonderful summer holiday.

I wish to take this time to sincerely thank all of our teaching, academic and administrative support staff for their unending enthusiasm, positivity and can-do attitude across a very busy year. I wish to also thank the Board of Trustees, PTA and Gala Committee and all of our fabulous school and parish families for the support of our school. It takes a village to raise a child, and the Our Lady Star of the Sea village is a very special one!

Wishing you all of God’s blessings over the Christmas and New Year break.

Tena koe, e te whetu o te whanau moana’    Greetings Our Lady Star of the Sea Families.

As the term and year’s end grows closer, the Board had held its final meeting for the year this past Tuesday. From Tuesday’s meeting we confirmed that the painting of the school will commence over the holiday period, reviewed the academic achievements of the students at year end and have committed to the COLA install before spring next year.

It was also a time to reflect on what events the school, our students and community have to celebrate in 2019 (Dreaming Day, new school vision, athletics, chess, middle school production, tree planting day, Gala, ERO review, Assemblies and many more).

Prize giving was the opportunity to celebrate academic, special character, sports, art and values of the students at prize giving, giving acknowledgement of our year 6 leavers has been a highlight.

2020 will also see some teaching and support staff not returning to our school as they embark on their next adventures. To you, a thank you for the dedication, support and drive you have shown that has developed, grown and strengthened our children over your time with us. We will miss you, as will the students and families that you have touched.

A special thanks also to the PTA and PTA “Helping Hands” for all the work they have done to support the school and families when they need that little something. You make a huge difference.

Your Board can now advise our community of the compulsory attendance dues and voluntary contributions for 2020.

  • The Diocese has set the compulsory attendance dues for 2020 at $448.00 per student
  • The Diocese have also requested a voluntary special character contribution of $50.00 per student.
  • Your Board is also requesting a voluntary contribution of $500.00 per student.

The voluntary contribution goes towards the funding and staffing of the additional educational and support programmes in place at our school such as: learning support assistants and information centre support staff, additional resources, ICT provision and technical support, additional Professional Development for teaching staff and curriculum development tools and support

Your contribution will also be used to fund those other activities such as online learning media, Education Outside the Classroom, class trips, end of year outings, visiting performers and artists.

As you know, this voluntary contribution is tax deductible with the added bonus of families not being approached throughout the year for the individual cost of the activities as mentioned above.

The total of compulsory attendance dues and voluntary contributions therefore comes to $998.00 per student for the 2020 school year.

Finally we wish all families the best of wishes over this Christmas and New Year period and look forward to seeing you on your safe return in 2020.

Ma te atua koutou e manaaki, o koutou whanau.       God bless you and your families.

Vaughan Fraser

BOT Chairman

A huge THANK-YOU to all our wonderful caring Helping Hands Volunteers who have made a difference in giving their valuable time to bake for families in their time of need.

Every one of you who took the time to bake a cake or make a meal, you need to know that you truly made the families that received these offerings, feel very cared for & loved within our school community.

We THANK each & every one of you, as we all know our time is precious, & everyone is very busy juggling work & family life commitments however, you have managed to find the time to care & help make a difference throughout this year.

This year Helping Hands has delivered 34 cakes & 30 meals to our precious families ~ which equates to a whole lot of kindness given through the generosity of your time.

If you would like to add your name to the helping hands register, please see the ladies in the office.

If you are currently on this list & cannot provide help or your children are leaving school this year, please let the office ladies know, to remove you off this register.

During the school year, if you know of a family that is under a stressful time with an illness, family bereavement, or a new addition to the family – please advise a teacher, Detta Fairweather or the office ladies.

Again to all who used their Helping Hands, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

God Bless you all & may you have a safe & Happy Christmas & Summer Holidays.
