Marae

In Term One, the Middle School went to Nga
Kete Wananga Marae at Manukau Institute of Technology. The students took part
in the powhiri, and then did a variety of activities over the course of the
day.

Spinning
Tops
I was
delighted when my poi was finished!
When everyone had completed theirs we practiced with our pois.
Children were
swinging their pois around and around like spinning tops in the air.
I took my poi
that was as long as a giraffe’s neck and pushed it down inside my bag to keep
it safe.

Meyer, Room 16

Marae Visit
The Middle
Team from Our Lady Star of the Sea were invited to visit the Marae at Otara.
The Kaumatua greeted us with a song and a hongi and after that we were
separated into three groups. My group
started with a song and then played a game called knuckle bones. After morning
tea we made some pois and our last activity was learning about Maori patterns
and carvings.
Before we left
we sang the Irish Blessing and the Kuia invited the Middle Team to sleep over
at the Marae.

Iron
Brion
In Term 2, Iron Brion came to Our Lady Star
of the Sea and taught everyone about healthy eating, and what types of food
have iron in them.
|
|
|
| Iron Brion
"Iron Brion!" was what we all
shouted when Iron Brion came to our school. Ah-ah-ah Shoe! Iron Brion was here
to talk about healthy food and the four different food groups. We all found out
that red meat is the healthiest. After, we played Iron Brion's boogie game.
Shalom and Danny boogied down until they dropped, then we did the Iron Brion
workout.
Kayla Kippen, Room 11
Food Groups
Ah-Ah-Ah-Shoe! Iron Brion made us laugh
all the way through his show. He came to talk to us about healthy eating and
the 4 food groups which foods have lots of iron in them. We need iron to give
us energy and to stop us getting sick.
Iron Brion made us use our thinking caps
and we had to answer questions about healthy eating. If we were lucky enough to
be chosen, we got a prize. Danny and Shalom boogied in Iron Brion’s dancing
game and we all had a great time doing Iron Brion’s workout. Hoo-Ha-Hoo-Ha-Ha!
After the show we all ate delicious healthy burgers.

Folk
Dancing
On Tuesday 16 August, and Tuesday 23 August
the Year 4 and 3 students went to the ASB Stadium in Kohimarama to folk dance
with lots of students from other schools.

Folk Dancing
I was 99% freaking out! I felt microscopic
in my surroundings. There was a massive audience and I didn’t want to embarrass
myself in front of 100’s of people. I was completely lost inside my head.
My feet were freezing. I forgot the dances
and I was physically out of strength. I was under extreme pressure because I
thought that I had to get everything perfect. The morning tea break came and I
was relieved. At least now I would have time to think about remembering the
dances ahead. Reluctantly, I managed to prepare myself for the second half. I
aced the dances and was glad that that nerve wracking moment was over!
Daniel Hill, Room 13

Reasons to Like Folk Dancing
I like folk dancing because you can do
dances and learn new songs that you haven’t heard before. I also like listening
to the music. My favourite dance is ‘Yesh!’ because it is a really joyful song
to dance to.I like going under the people’s arms that make the bridge. It’s
really fun when you are going sideways with your partner, then go up to the
front of the set again.
We should do folk dancing so that we can
get some exercise and be awesome at dancing. I also enjoy doing dance moves
like jumping, side stepping, skipping and other moves like walking forward and
back, getting down on your hands and knees and swinging my hands backwards and
forwards.

Playhouse Theatre – Rugby Show
In
Week 5 of Term 3, Our Lady Star of the Sea students were lucky enough to have
the Playhouse Theatre troupe perform for them. The play that they shared with
us was a story about
the Rugby World Cup and starred characters such as ‘Richie McApple-Core’,
a French rooster named Napoleon, and a pair of French rugby players.

Riana
The excited children yelled loudly as
Riana sprinted and scored. Most people wanted the All Blanks to win, not the
French. I was relieved when Riana slowly scored a spectacular try. All the kids
giggled crazily because Riana was doing funny things. We laughed for most of
the show. All of the actors smiled happily, that's what made it enjoyable. We
cheered, clapped and laughed.
Shalom DeSouza, Room 11
Richie McApple-Core
The crowd went wild. We cheered
and clapped for Richie McApple-Core. We wanted the All Blacks to win the
Rugby World cup, not the French. Pierre tackled Richie for the ball but Richie
dodged around him and passed the ball to Riana. Riana was so surprised but she
sprinted down the field and dived down to score a try! The All Blacks won the
Rugby World Cup! We yelled with joy and we looked forward to a trip in Richie’s
glider.
