Basic Facts

1. Focus first on accuracy of solving the problems i.e. getting them correct.

2. Once this is established focus on speed i.e. completing them within a timeframe

Work on groupings first:

  • Within 5 –      e.g.  2+3, 1+4, 5+0 etc
  • With 5 –         e.g.  5+1, 5+2, 5+3 etc
  • Within 10 –    e.g. 1+9, 2+8, 3+7 etc
  • Doubles to 10 – e.g. 2+2, 5+5, 3+3 etc
  • With 10 –       e.g. 10+4, 10+6, 10+9 etc
  • Use playing cards without the picture cards and play snap or match the numbers that add up to 10

To practice basic facts your child can:

  • Draw the fact (e.g. 3 flowers and 6 flowers)
  • Record the results in their own way
  • Record the fact as an equation (e.g. 4 + 5 = 9)
  • Write it out 5 times
  • Image it (picture it in their mind). Talk to someone about their imaging.
  • Show the fact with materials e.g. buttons, pencils, toothpicks, fingers
  • Have them explain how they solved the problem (e.g. 17 – 4 = 13: I know that 7 take away 4 is 3, and then I add on the 10.)
  • Make flash Cards or a number fan to practise your tables or just those you do not know well
