Phonological Awareness Skills - Activities to support sound/letter knowledge

Identify the number of syllables in a word

Count, clap or tap the ‘beats’ or syllables in a word

e.g.     How many claps in car?                      One

How many claps inmusic?                      Two

How many claps innewspaper?               Three

How many claps intelevision?                 Four

Recognise rhyming words according to common sound patterns


(made by the part of the word containing the stressed vowel)



e.g.      Which word rhymes with bed?               Lid, road, head,

          bed — head 

Make up new rhyme

Words that rhyme

e.g.      owl    growl, fowl, towel 

Match sounds in words

Match words that have the same beginning sound as hat?   
run, hope, jump,
hat   hope  

Sing and say alphabet

Play “I SPY” a word beginning with the letter ....

Spelling

Look; cover; write; check
 (Visual learners)

Look at the word, cover it, write it down from memory and check.

Say, cover; say recite, write; check (Sound learners)

Say the word as you look at it (because), break it into syllables/parts (be/cause), say each letter aloud (b-e/c-a-u-s-e), coverit, say the word, break it into syllables/parts and say each letter again, write it from memory saying each letter aloud,check.

Look and copy; cover and write; check; repeat (Kinesthetic/feeling learners)

Look at the word and copy it (maybe more than once), cover the word and write from memory, check and repeat.
